Phew. Took some doing, but I finally got my shonky modem to work. I found a nice boxed warning on page 15 of the user's manual: you're supposed to physically remove the modem before reinstalling XP. Gee, thanks Zoom! I didn't have to reinstall XP again, thank goodness. That would have made me crazy.
