:: reality check

So there I was fretting about the builder still not having given me a quote for the shed doors let alone fitted them, and about the as-yet-uncleaned carpets and a myriad other minutae, when Andrew rang with some terrible news. His friend Kate, the artist we stayed with in the Western Isles, has had her baby -- a wonderful event of course, but Calum was born with heart defects that mean he'll probably have to have surgery in the next couple of weeks. He's in an incubator and is doing a bit better now than when he was born (on Wednesday I think) -- he had quite bad breathing difficulties that have eased. He also has a couple of other physical problems which may be minor or may be symptoms of a syndrome of some kind. Everyone at the hospital has been wonderful, but Kate and her partner have been on a real rollercoaster ride, hoping and praying that all will be well in the end.

Lots of positive thinking, good vibes and prayers please, for Kate, Robbie and wee Calum.
