Anyway yes, Bertie was rummaging under his favourite bush looking for rabbits this afternoon when a deer burst out of the undergrowth and rushed past us. I thought Bertie might chase it, but he just stared at it and went back to the rabbit hunt. Roe deer aren't very big, but this one was still a lot bigger than him and it had antlers. My next-door neighbour said she saw a deer in her back garden a few years ago, so they do get around. But it would have to cross roads (or jump 15ft fences) to get into the field from open land.
On this morning's walk, Bertie nearly pulled me off my feet chasing after ... a rock. But it could have been a hedgehog, it was the same shape, size and colour.
Rock
Hedgehog
See? It's a mistake anyone could make.
I had a barbecue last night, and it was great. I got three disposable BBQs -- tinfoil dishes filled with charcoal and fitted with a grille -- and fired one up, cooked myself a salmon fillet. Yum! I'm going to make a habit of it, maybe do some vege kebabs as well next time.
Bertie became hysterical when I lit the barbie -- the flames take about 20 minutes to die down. He must just despair of me sometimes. Here I was completely ignoring the fact that the garden was ON FIRE, even though he was barking his head off right next to the blaze.
